About the Workshop

Young Actors Stage will be holding our summer main stage production of Disney's THE LITTLE MERMAID JR at Sierra 2. Cast members ages 7-17 will rehearse Monday-Friday, the first 3 weeks of August.  During this fun and intensive rehearsal process, cast members will have the chance to sing, dance, and act each day. Rehearsals will consist of warm-ups and technique sessions in addition to learning the material from the show.

About the Show

In a magical kingdom fathoms below, the beautiful young mermaid Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above.  But first, she'll have to defy her father King Triton, make a deal with the evil sea witch Ursula, and convince Prince Eric that she is the girl with the enchanting voice.

Adapted from Disney’s 2008 Broadway production,  Disney's THE LITTLE MERMAID JR features the hit songs "Part of Your World," "She’s in Love," and the Oscar-winning "Under the Sea."

General Auditions: Saturday, June 23 (2pm-6pm)- By Appointment

Callbacks: Saturday, June 30 (12pm-2pm)- Callbacks

General Auditions: Cast members will be scheduled an audition appointment time. (Auditions may run late.)  All workshop participants will be cast in the ensemble.  Auditions will determine featured roles.  Please come to your audition prepared with a song of your choice.  You may use an accompaniment CD or ipod.  You may sing without music, but it is not recommended.  Sing a song that shows off your vocal range and personality.  You may sing a song from the show.  Don’t forget to act! You may also be asked to stay late to perform a short scene from the show, and/or  learn a group dance combination.

Accompaniment tracks for most songs can be found on itunes or other online karaoke websites. Some sites have a key transposition option.  This is one of many: http://www.karaoke-version.com/

Callbacks:  Some cast members will be asked to return on June 30 for callbacks.  You may be told immediately after your first audition if you are being asked back, or you may receive an email later in the week.  During callbacks cast members will be asked to sing or read scenes for specific roles.  Dancers may be taught a combination.  Plan to attend the entire session from 12pm-2pm.  If you do not receive a callback, it does not necessarily mean you will not be receiving a featured role.

(If you are only interested in an ensemble role you will not be required to sing or perform a scene by yourself.)

The cast list will be announced by email as soon as decisions have been finalized.

General rehearsals for all cast members will be held at Sierra 2 Studios, Monday-Friday (9am-12pm) July 30-August 10.  Rehearsals will begin with a group warm-up and technique session.  There will be a monitored lunch break.  Certain cast members will be scheduled to stay from 1pm-3pm for additional rehearsals.  Rehearsal time may be extended as needed.   Larger roles will require a larger time commitment.  Due to limited rehearsal time we will not be able to go back and re-teach or re-stage scenes for students who are absent.  If a cast member misses a rehearsal, they may not be placed in that particular number.  It is extremely important that you keep track of the schedule and which days you are scheduled to stay late.  Mark any conflicts you may have and present them with your registration packet in advance.  Tech week (the week of the performance) will take place in the theater Monday-Thursday (August 13-16).  Official end-times are TBD.  Expect all day and into the evening rehearsals.  Attendance is mandatory. Missing a mandatory rehearsal may result in being removed form the show.

Scholarship Information

A scholarship fund has been established for students in need of financial assistance. Scholarship applications for the summer workshop must be received by June 16, 2012, and will be given to students deemed most appropriate from the pool of applicants.  Partial or full scholarships may be awarded.

Cast members will be required to provide their own costumes. We make every effort to keep costs to a minimum and to allow flexibility and creativity.  Specific items will be required for the summer production.

Registration Night/ Q & A (early registration due)

Registration Night will be held at Sierra 2 Studios, May 7 (6pm-7pm).  The directors will briefly discuss important information pertaining to this workshop session and be available to answer any questions you may have.  The required registration forms (Registration Form; Liability/Photo Release; Workshop Policy Sheet; Audition Form) will be available and must be turned in that evening to complete your early registration.  Please make sure you bring your tuition payment and conflict calendar with you.

If you are unable to attend you may register by mail or online.  Be sure to send in all forms found in the Registration Packet by the deadlines to complete your registration.  Those who register late may not receive their script on the first day of rehearsal depending on when the shipment arrives.  Those who register after the cast list has been announced will be eligible for ensemble roles only.

Parent Meeting

A mandatory parent meeting will be scheduled once the show has been cast. You will receive important information critical to the success of your cast member and the show.

Refund Policy

No refunds of tuition will be made once the cast list is announced except in extenuating circumstances such as death in the family, or a medical injury, serious illness or surgery not known about prior to the first workshop session.

Registered cast members will receive a full refund of tuition, minus a $25 processing fee if they remove themselves from the cast before or on the day of auditions.  Registered cast members will receive one-half refund of tuition, if they remove themselves after audition day but before the cast list is announced.  No refunds of tuition will be given to cast members removed from the cast by YAS staff for behavioral reasons.

Disruptive students will be asked to sit out of rehearsal and will not be eligible to participate in the number being taught. Any student whose behavior is deemed inappropriate by YAS staff will be dismissed from the workshop without a refund of the registration fee.  Cast members and their parents must be aware that rehearsals can be strenuous and require cast members to have the ability to focus for up to 90 minutes at a time.
